What is a home defense shotgun?
Any shotgun that exists primarily to defend the home is a “home defense shotgun”, however, more and more shotguns are being designed specifically for home defense. Many of these are called tactical shotguns. Most people can agree that a home defense shotgun should have a short barrel (around 18″) and hold as many rounds as possible (usually 8).
We carry a wide variety of shotguns.
Are shotguns good for home defense?
As Joe Biden once said, “Get a shotgun”. All politician’s advice aside, shotguns have been used for many purposes, including home defense, for decades. Why? They are available, cheap and (very) effective.
With technology advancements and higher capacity magazines available, more and more Spillway Sportsman customers looking to protect themselves are moving to handguns, but shotguns will never be going away. Many people believe that the best tool to defend your family is a shotgun. In fact, just the unmistakable sound of a round being racked in a pump shotgun (chk-chk) is usually enough to make any bad guy to run away at cheetah like speeds.
Please note that a shotgun is a tool and you do need to practice with it. This doesn’t mean that you have to go to the range 7 days a week but you really do need to be familiar with your weapon if you are going to have any chance at all of defending your home with it under pressure. Some people even buy “Snappy’s Snap Caps” (12ga available here at Amazon). These are dummy rounds (that don’t go bang) for practicing loading, pumping, reloading, etc.
Which shotgun ammo is best for home defense?
Shotguns can shoot slugs (one large heavy bullet), buckshot (usually 8 or 9 large pellets), and birdshot (a whole bunch of tiny pellets). Most people buying a round for home defense grab #0 or #00 Buckshot.
Law Enforcement Officers, under pressure and in the heat of the moment, often miss 75% of the time! Do you think you can do better than them? A good #00 buckshot round is going to send 8 pellets at the target. These are high velocity, large pellets; if all 8 hit the target it is like shooting it 8 times. The idea here is that a miss can still be a hit. No, you can’t just point the shotgun in the target’s direction and fire, but as the round travels through the air the pellets spread further and further apart. This is not very far at close ranges, but still, you get the idea. If you’re not certain, just check with us while you are at our gun store.
How should I store my home defense shotgun?
You want this weapon safe and locked up but you also want to be able to pick it up and use it if and when you need to. So how do you store it?
This is a good question to ask us when you’re in the store, because how you store it depends on a variety of variables. If there are young kids in the home, many people keep their shotgun in a safe, or hanging on the wall above a door with a trigger lock on it and unloaded. Other adults who live alone keep shells in the tube but not chambered.
Which shotgun should I buy?
When you are in the store our gun salespeople can help you make this decision. What else will the gun be used for? How long are your arms? Are you getting a 12 gauge? There are a few variables here. That said, below is our most popular shotgun for home defense.
